THE ANSWER’S HERE IN THE MIDST OF IT ALL
IT’S A CRAZY MYSTICAL CALL
THE CHANCE AND FEAR, A STARRING FALL…
IT’S A HAZY WISH TO FOLLOW
RANDOM NATURE A SHOOTING STAR
AND YOU WONDER WHERE YOU ARE
A CHECKERED BOARD A DECK OF CARDS
AND YOU WONDER WHO YOU ARE
SCATTERED PICTURES ACROSS THE SAND
VACANT SOUL IN THE SHELL OF A MAN
WHAT’S THE POINT WHAT’S THE PARABLE
SO IMMORAL, SO TERRIBLE
THE QUESTIONS FORM THE MYTHICAL WALL
IT’S A CRAZY MIXED-UP CALL
NO CHANCE, NO FEAR, NO FALLING STAR…
IT’S A LAZY PUSH TO SWALLOW
RANDOM WORDS WILL LEAVE A SCAR
AND YOU WONDER AT ALL WE ARE
A CHECKERED PAST A HOUSE OF CARDS
AND YOU WONDER WE ARE AT ALL
DEEPER ETCHINGS UPON THE SAND
TIDE’S ROLLING IN…NOW I UNDERSTAND
TRANSIENT COULD BE TERRIBLE
TRANSCENDANCE…MAKES IT WHOLE
we occupy the planet for such a short time, always trying to put larger meanings on things...i like the lines with "transient" and "transendance"...
a few years after this song was written, i ran into a grade school girlfriend (it had been 20 yrs) ...some things had changed (although i was still enamoured with this girl) she had been recently widowed and just trying to connect some old bonds.. she was still deeply attached with her husband, so much so, they had made a pact before his death (they knew it was coming and were able to "plan" for things) If he approved of a follow-on lover for her, he would, in his deceased state, send a "shooting star" to tell her "no, that's not the right one for you"...i was thinking if he was able to move a large chunk of rock through space on a whim from the great beyond, he might also just push a pen and paper and tell her what for...
she never called again, perhaps she saw a meteor shower...
although this song was completed relatively expeditiously, i consider it one of the more polished and best sounding tracks we have done...everything just seemed to fit..
